Yesterday, we saw Scott Brown win the Massachusetts Senate seat, left by Ted Kennedy. The press reports his victory as the biggest political upset in recent history! Ironically, it’s taken place on the same soil that Paul Revere rode to herald a revolt against the British to begin the Revolutionary War and utlimately to secure our Independence.
This is a teachable moment in homeschooling. Last night, our teens hovered around the computer at 8 PM CST awaiting the results. They understand, at least intellectually, the impact of this – due to their study of political policy. I loved seeing the light in their eyes – the look of hope – when they realized the results.
What’s transpired politically over the past year is unthinkable. We’ve watched those who claim to represent us, attempt to high-jack and pillage our nation.
Meanwhile, back at home, we plug along, educating the citizens of tomorrow. Have we been guilty of wondering how our kids are going to survive the future rather than take their places as leaders in uncertain times? I know I have … I’ve wondered what their lives will be like … will they be persecuted for their faith? Will they be strong enough to stand? What degree of parental rights will they have? Will they have a choice in alternative health care? Education?
But, when I see Scott Brown stand up and take his place as a leader and how it sends shockwaves across the nation – it energizes me as a homeschooling mom. One man really CAN make a difference – all the difference.
Here at home my job is to make sure our kids have the tools they need to lead. A good heart, faith and desire won’t be enough. They’ll also need a well trained mind, wisdom and knowledge.
It’s a good day for home education!
Let’s make history!

Well said Debi! As I was ready to give up on home schooling just this week (had one of those days), you quickly reminded me why we are doing what we do!! There are definitely good days and bad and we just can’t forget the “why”.
As far as this post, it reminds me of my feelings when President Obama was elected. I was not particularly thrilled but chose to respect the office/authority. I just remember saying over and over, God has a plan, He is in charge, He knows what is best. We must continue to believe that and when we do, we see miracles along the way. God knew we needed an awakening in our country and boy have we seen it first hand! Praise His Name! Each vote we cast is important and does count!
We have a friend running for Judge here in Van Zandt County. I was saddened to learn recently that out of about 52,000 residents in the county, only about 4,000 are expected to vote. Wow, that is only 8% of the population expected to vote. I just don’t understand it. If we don’t exercise our freedom we will be sure to lose it. The “men and women in Washington” will continue to think we are too ignorant to care and proceed with making choices FOR us instead of WITH us.
My encouragement to your readers…GET OUT AND VOTE, YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!
Really enjoy the blog!
I am curious, Debbie….I read he is NOT pro-life…..do you know if it is true?
Susan,
He’s not 100% in line with the ‘pro-life’ agenda – but he stands for most of what we hold dear and the Republican platform. Catholics endorsed him as he opposes using tax money to fund abortions in healthcare reform. Here’s what The Catholic News Agency wrote on Scott Brown.
