About this time of year I get distracted. I find myself looking for relief and even depending on the weather to help me feel energized. I need something to give myself to and to catch my breath for the last – HOME STRETCH - of the school year.
Spring break is a nice concept. Its origin is ‘Easter break’ – but I won’t go there… The idea of stopping to regroup is a good one. Especially when the race is long and the runner is growing tired of the pace … restless … weary … longing for a break … mentally overwhelmed (you fill in the blank).
Most years I think we should be further along in our school work than we are by now, but the facts are the facts. The question is, “how do I finish strong?”. I laugh at myself because the FINISH LINE often gets moved as I adjust and readjust our school year. Even so, I never fail to marvel at the fruit of our labor. It’s one of the reasons we educate at home.
Here’s my ideas for our Spring Break before we hit the home stretch:
- Rest for the weary {that would be me – make sure I’m getting enough – and our teens also!}
- Assess each student {spend time with each one – take a good look at where they are}
- Spring clean the house {it’s next to godliness – right?}
- Get outside {the yard is calling my name – I think I hear it saying, “H-E-L-P”}
- Go for walks and bike rides {good times alone or with the kids}
- Plan family dinners {everyone benefits}
- Take a look at the schedule for home life {have we ‘fallen off the wagon’?}
- Read a new book or 2 {Dancing with My Father, The Mom Walk}
- Keep reading to our younger boys {We’re almost finished with the ‘Little House’ series}
Even football teams have a half-time and basketball teams take *time out*. The game year’s not over. In fact, the most intense days lie ahead. I’m stopping to prepare myself and our family for the HOME STRETCH (that’s the hard part) because once we ‘hit the ground running’ again, there won’t be time to look back until the race (for this year) is over.
Any thoughts?

Great thoughts. I tend to just work straight through. Home school year round. “Let’s not get rusty, kids.” But I know we should take a break every now and then. God is good to show us that in scripture, but I can be hard headed. Thank you for sharing.
Yea – we school year round like a lot of big families do. But we wrap up the big stuff by the end of the school year and work on drill, catch-up and extras in the summer. So a short break is welcomed as long as they don’t get ‘rusty’ and we don’t loose too much ground.
I love this Debi! Rest is a good thing….something I need to remind myself of often.
I love the practical-ness (if that is even a real word) of your posts. They are very encouraging!

I just wanted to correct the email address I left on here. For some reason, my computer put my husband’s email! Sorry about that.
