We took our ‘school’ outside again today. I’ve done this so many times through the years, it brings back sweet memories of the kids reading on the trampoline, pouring over math at the picnic table and, of course, running inside to announce the discovery of a new creature – be it ever so small {we live in the ‘burbs’.}
This morning we retreated to the patio and I continued reading Those Happy Golden Years – one of my favorite Laura Ingalls Wilder books! We read:
- How Laura used wisdom, determination and kindness to lead her pupils in the freezing – 1 room school house.
- What a life of misery looks like with a discontented wife, passive husband and chronically upset child – from her hosts, the Brewster’s.
- Chivalry demonstrated as Almanzo Wilder rescued Laura each weekend to deliver her safely home – braving the elements.
- How happy parents, regardless of circumstances, make a ‘home’.
- And that learning is an opportunity – that we should ALL take advantage of rather than an obligation.
As I read through the chapters, Samuel slaved over his handwriting and Grammar as we traveled back in time – to simpler days. Micah dreamed, as dreamers do – as he envisioned the late 1800′s – understanding the sacrifice and hardship that shaped their lives and anchored them to the truths they lived for.
I enjoyed the break from the ‘daily’ – it’s always good to get away.
In the captivating October breezes, a woodpecker kept time overhead, the cat found our makeshift classroom and came for affection, leaves waffled from the trees – ever so slowly, birds spiraled above it all and the blue sky – threatened to take our breath away. *sigh*
Laura’s right – learning really IS an opportunity.

It is fun, to enjoy the outdoors while working on school. Thanks for sharing.
Oh I too have so many memories of school days like these…and usually a baby in my lap, like you have had also. I also have such precious pictures of us doing this. It doesn’t seem as easy to do with just one schooling…but I still need to make a point to take it outside our walls.
I want to come listen! Your afternoon sounds heavenly. Can’t wait to start reading “big girl books” to Avery.
I LOVE when we get to do schoolwork outside! We did it on the patio table today, in fact. (And I LOVE Laura Ingalls Wilder!)
I am looking forward to these days with my little ones . . . which is actually why I’m commenting here (couldn’t find a contact form, sorry!). Before my children were born I knew I wanted to homeschool. Unfortunately, I haven’t the foggiest idea where to begin and my preschooler is showing signs that she needs more challenges intellectually. So many moms are exactly where I am that I have asked a few experienced homeschooling moms to contribute their thoughts for a series on Mommypotamus. Would you consider joining them??? Please email me if you’re interested!
