Joel had a school project. Questions to answer – an interview of sorts. “What quality is the most important in marriage?” I looked at my handsome son across the table, pencil in hand; eyes fixed on me for an answer.
“Commitment”, I heard myself say. Off the top of my head, out of the overflow of my heart. Other qualities march at a distance from this one.
I watched him scribble down my answer with a look of satisfaction. I wonder how much of this he actually understands.
I linger at the table once he’s long, gone and the slide-show powers-up in my mind. The parade of memories that plays unprovoked.
The easy times when love and grace are the playing-field of life and the dry times, when feelings grow cold and life doesn’t seem to work ~ all woven together on purpose. Purposing to love, believe and live for something much greater than oneself.
This is what it all comes down to. Commitment. One person giving everything to another – forever and for always.
And what do we get in return? So much more than we ever deserve!
I return to my duties humming this song and watching the clock for his return home – the one who’s committed to me in a way that stirs my heart for more. May Joel walk in his father’s footsteps and pass on the shelter of selfless living to his children.
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Matthew 16:25
