True confession = trash day is my next to favorite day of the week. After Sunday, of course .
Call me “OCD” – but I prefer to think of this relished activity as uhhh … ‘strategic’. Plus, I really like to multitask – it helps me feel efficient and gives me energy!

Since we live in the “burbs” we have trash service twice a week and recycling once. Our daughter performed a speech for NCFCA competition last year on ‘recycling’. During her countless hours of research we learned, as a family, that we could do MORE to help the environment through putting out less trash and recycling more.
Now,we’re not your average family. Tim and I have been recycling since the late 80′s when we lived in California. But, through Victoria’s encouragement and with a bit more effort, we’ve turned things around and started recycling more than we thow away weekly!! Amazing, isn’t it? And fun! (Ok, it’s not exactly FUN – but it’s a family effort)
The kids and I go through the house every Monday and gather ALL the empty recyclables – shampoo bottles, empty pickle jars, grocery bags, etc… These items find their place by the curb each Tuesday morning – without exception. Yeah, I’m committed to the environment, but deep down I’m more committed to keeping a clutter free home!
I look at it this way – the trash truck comes (funded by MY tax dollars) each week to gather my items – as I take advantage of this service it services MY efforts to keep a clean home. Wallah! Multitasking at its best. Plus it’s educational for the kids. Don’t they go to great lengths to teach this stuff in school?
This works for garbage too – I have the kids scour the entire house for extra garbage so the city can haul it off the next day. Some have to learn what garbage is and is not … (If you have teenage boys you understand me perfectly)
I do this knowing – my load will be lighter, the house will smell better and we’ll have less stuff to deal with. I get excited just thinking about it … did I mention it’s my next to favorite day?

And I thought I was the only one who LOVED trash day!
Cleaning, emptying, recycling. . . my weekly feel good moment.
I love it!!!
We must be soulmates!
Great post! I’m glad I’m not the only one who enjoys recycling and trash day too! It’s a little different living in an apartment, but it’s worth the extra effort knowing that we’re making a contribution to the environment even in the smallest of ways. (And tidying up the house as well!) So glad you’re teaching your little ones and teenagers these important values! Blessings!
